Why we should press / raise arms overhead?

Physically – Pressing overhead can be very beneficial if it is done on the right way and with the right reason. As we know, overhead pressing is activating shoulder muscles, muscles who are stabilizing the shoulder and indirectly core muscles if is done correctly. In I AM training methodology, we learn people first how to press overhead unilaterally (with one arm). One of the most common mistakes in creating backward lean or lumbar arch and for that we are using our coaching tricks to prevent that. One of our favourite tools for overhead press is kettlebell because movement with kettlebell naturally creates external rotation at the shoulder and activating subscapularis muscle which is a key shoulder stabilizer. But most important advice is – address before press.
Emotionally – Raising arms above your head symbolize joy, power, pride and enthusiasm. Arms down with slumped posture indicates loss, low energy, lack of power and confidence. Based on the research of Olympic athletes it is proven that arms overhead (aka ‘Victory Salute’) is hard wired in our DNA. Similar research was done with blind athletes who were doing the move after win or success. Human nature of win and loses is really impressive, same like in the life.
Professionally – If you have a tough day, week or month at work, if your boss is pressuring you about deadlines, if you don’t have energy, confidence and feeling stressed … just raise your arms overhead for few second and something amazing will happen – it will invigorate your nervous system, increase confidence, decrease cortisol and stress levels, release tension in your muscles and energize you. It will probably put a smile on your face after you have read this, if not now already.
